If we study the metallurgic tradition of this region and the history of industry such as hand hammered metal craft manufacturing, it is said that the production of “Wakugi” (Japanese Nail) during the Edo period marked a turning point.
After that, the history and culture of “manufacturing and craftmanship” were continuously protected by the ancestors and amid changing times, these craftsmen have continued to meet new challenges, by focusing their advanced skills and intelligence on opening up new territories, such as hand hammered metal crafts and sharp-edged craftsmen’s tools.
In recent years, while traditional industries such as hand hammered metal crafting and forging are passed on from generation to generation, Tsubame City has also branched out into metal cutlery and metal housewares while Sanjo City has progressed to making work tools and items for hairdressers and beauticians.
The two towns create attractive products ideal for modern living and articles without which no modern home would be complete. To create these products, craftsmen have to develop increasingly sophisticated processing technologies and in this way the Tsubame-Sanjo area has conquered a position as one of the world’s leading technological zones and allowing the “manufacturing and craftmanship” tradition to further evolve.
